WASHINGTON - A bomb blast in Kabul on Saturday killed a journalist and driver of a private television channel and injured six others, Afghan officials said.
The detainees belonged to Khurshid TV and were traveling in a minibus loaded with explosives. The bomber struck shortly afternoon in front of a crowded street, officials said.
Feroz Bashiri, director of the Afghan government's media and information center, condemned the blast. He said that attack on journalists was an attack on freedom of expression and freedom of media. Bashiri said in a tweet that the government was seriously investigating the shooting.
The Kabul-based Committee to Protect Afghan Journalists has also condemned the deadly blast and called for those responsible for justice.
The Taliban has expressed dissatisfaction with the blast, while no other group has claimed responsibility.
Four people, including two Khurshid TV workers, were injured in a similar attack last year.
The Taliban and other militant groups have previously targeted journalists.
In 2018, local and international groups working for journalists named Afghanistan the most dangerous country in the world for journalists. This year, 15 journalists were killed in various incidents in the country.
In 2016, a Taliban suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into a bus carrying employees of Tolo TV, a private Kabul channel. The powerful blast killed seven journalists.
Tolo is one of the largest media groups in Afghanistan. At that time, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast, alleging that Tolo TV was running a propaganda campaign against them.
